**Two real phones, two people.** Both are iPhone 14 Pro contexts with their own video; neither knows about the other except through the product.

**What I pressed that changes state, declared up front:** `split-confirm` on phone 1 and `split-invitation-accept` on phone 2. Neither moves money, both move the table's settlement state, and without them there is no split to witness. **I pressed nothing that pays** — no `split-invitation-pay-*`, no `payhow-*`.

**I expected:** I send our order to the kitchen

**I saw:** Basket header: "1 Penguin (You)", "2 All", "1 Marvel". Order sent.

**I expected:** I ask for the check and say we want to split it

**I saw:** It offers “Split the check (2)”. Whole sheet: "— REQUEST CHECK — Staff notified and will be with you shortly! How would you like to settle your bill? Cover Split the check (2)". No money figure in it.

**I expected:** I choose Split, and it asks how many ways

**I saw:** A stepper, defaulting to “Split 2 ways”. Sheet: "— REQUEST CHECK — Staff notified and will be with you shortly! How many ways? Split 2 waysCancel". It does not tell me what a half comes to — I am splitting a number I have never been shown.

**I expected:** I confirm the split — this invites her, and I say so plainly

**I expected:** her phone should now be telling her she has been invited to split

**I saw:** She is told: "Penguin wants to split the bill 2 ways. Even split of the table total — choose how you’d like to pay. Accept split Pay for the table Pay for my order". Her options: split-invitation-accept, split-invitation-pay-own, split-invitation-pay-table. It never names her share — she is asked to agree to a half whose size she has not been told.

**I expected:** she accepts the split — no money moves, but the table state does

**I expected:** and my phone — does it tell me she agreed?

**I saw:** My phone shows `nothing about the split`. Re-opening the service drawer reads: "TABLE 9973 · SERVICE How can we help? Call Waiter Someone will stop by Silverware A fresh set Check Please Ready to settle up Your server is nearby — we'll be right with you.". > **Payment-ish network calls:** none

> **What I left behind:** table 9973 carries a live session with two guests, one placed order, an open check request, and a CONFIRMED 2-way split that diner 2 has accepted and neither of us paid. Somebody will have to clear that table. No card was ever entered and no money moved.

**Verdict:** WALKED

**Why it ended here:** Drove a real two-person split from ordering to an accepted invitation and stopped at the payment boundary by choice, not because the product stopped me.

## FOLLOW-UP — what happens after she accepts (`pass2-after-accept/`)

Step 08 above ended on "no settlement surface at all" and I would not report that off one
screenshot, so I ran it again on table 9974 and actively hunted for a pay surface from both
phones. **That hunt corrected me** — the full record, including my own retraction, is in
`pass2-after-accept/NOTES.md`. In short:

1. **The instant diner 2 accepts:** the invitation vanishes, nothing about paying is on her
   screen, and her *Check Please* is **disabled** — *"Your server is nearby — we'll be right
   with you."*
2. **After a full reload:** her invitation comes **back**, still offering *Accept split* /
   *Pay for the table* / *Pay for my order*. She is asked to accept a split she has already
   accepted. So there IS a route to pay — but only by reloading the page, and it presents
   itself as if nothing happened.
3. **Diner 1, who asked to split, has no route to pay at all.** No banner, *Check Please*
   **DISABLED**, tapping it does nothing, reloading does not help. The diner who chose to
   settle electronically can now only wait for a server.
